Apicoectomy

Root canals are commonly performed in our dental office, but occasionally, the treatment does not completely get rid of an infection. If this happens, an apicoectomy is performed by Dr. Nina Kiani in our West 34th NY dental office in order to complete the dental treatment.

Since there are so many nerves underneath a tooth, it is possible that not all of the infected tissue is removed during a root canal. If a patient still experiences pain or sensitivity to hot and cold after a root canal, there are still nerves present that need to be removed during the apicoectomy.

An apicoectomy is performed by numbing the area, then making an incision in the gum to reveal the root of the tooth. Infected tissue is removed to clean the area of the gum and the gums are then sutured back up. It is more extensive than a root canal, but only a very small area is treated, so it has a relatively short healing time. Like with root canals, we urge our patients to be careful and not chew on that side of the mouth for a few days until it heals.
