Veneers: Veneers are most frequently used as a cosmetic smile solution. They can be used use refinish the surface of a tooth and correct teeth that are too narrow or short, and cover-up stains, small chips and cracks. While a single veneer can be used to refinish an individual tooth, multiple veneers are most often used to refinish the most visible teeth and provide a smile makeover that’s fully customized and idealized. Like crowns, veneers are comprised of a thin porcelain shells that are fabricated from an impression of the existing tooth site. Veneers are usually much thinner than crowns, but the existing tooth structure will need to be slightly modified for permanent bonding and placement.

 

Crowns: Crowns may be used for cosmetic purposes, but they’re most frequently used to restore the surface of a tooth due to a fracture, severe chip, deep cavity, or following a root canal or other procedure that calls for the modification of the tooth.  Like veneers, crowns are custom fabricated to perfectly restore the appearance of a tooth, in addition to protecting its structure.  Crowns are frequently created from porcelain or ceramic, but they may also be formed from gold, porcelain fused to metal or other material.

Inlays/Onlays

Inlays/Onlays

Inlays and onlays are a type of restorative dental procedure that helps to protect the tooth from further decay or damage. It is also known as a partial crown, because the process is very similar to a crown. However, it is more conservative than a crown and involves less removal of healthy tooth structure.

Here at our West 34th Street New York dental practice, we perform inlays and onlays to help strengthen a tooth susceptible to breaking, prevent permanent damage that would need an implant or bridge, and restore its shape as well. The inlay is placed inside the tooth, while the onlay is more extensive and goes on the outside of the tooth.

 

Like with dental crowns, inlays and onlays performed in our office take about 2-3 weeks in total. Here is a summary of the procedure:

 

1. The patient visits our office and has a local anesthetic to numb the area of the tooth. This makes it so the patient is comfortable and does not experience any pain during the procedure.

2. A drill is used to remove the damaged portion of the tooth; this is where the inlay or onlay will go.

3. With the tooth prepared, impressions are made for the inlays or onlays and sent to the lab.

4. The patient returns in about two weeks to have the inlay or onlay bonded to their tooth. This is similar to a crown, though it is not covering the entire tooth.

Dental Bridges

Bridges

Dental bridges are one of many dental procedures performed here in our Nina Kiani, DDS, PC dental office. Bridges help to replace missing teeth by using an abutment where the missing tooth is, as well as crowns over the adjacent natural teeth to create a tether for the bridge and provide more stability.

 

Among the options for missing teeth, bridges are one of the more popular choices because they are less expensive and take less time to complete than dental implants. We encourage everyone with missing teeth to replace them with bridges or another option.

Keeping natural teeth is something every one of our patients hopes to achieve. Unfortunately, many of them are at risk of losing their teeth from decay, gum disease, or weakened teeth that could crack or fracture. By getting crowns placed over their teeth, Dr. Nina Kiani helps patients protect the original tooth structure.

Here at Nina Kiani, DMD, we use different materials for crowns, including porcelain, gold and porcelain fused to metal. These are the most stable and long-term materials available. The process for crowns goes as follows:

1. The patient’s tooth is prepared by contouring and filing down the structure to make room for the crown.

2. Impressions are taken of the tooth and sent off to the lab to make the permanent crown.

3. The patient wears a temporary crown for about two weeks, until the permanent crown is fabricated.

4. Dr. Kiani bonds the permanent crown to the patient’s tooth.
